In some instances, when invasive plants become too abundant, they can cause economic or environmental harm. Recent years have seen a dramatic rise in the application of genetic methods to understand aquatic biological invasions. In part these methods have been adopted to address fundamental questions in biogeography, evolutionary biology, population ecology, and other fields. But it is also commonly suggested that genetic information has the potential to directly inform the management of aquatic Our research encompasses a wide range of projects, exploring the ecology and management of coastal marine ecosystems. We focus primarily on invasion dynamics but also examine species interactions of both native and non-native species. Worryingly, over ten-times less was spent on management actions, such as prevention of future invasions, than damages.

"However, our figures are vastly underestimated due to knowledge gaps. Ballast Water Management Convention aims to stop the spread of potentially invasive aquatic species in ships’ ballast water. “This is a landmark step towards halting the spread of invasive aquatic species, which can cause havoc for local ecosystems, affect biodiversity and lead to substantial economic loss,” said IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim.
